More than 20 million Americans – some 7% of us – have diabetes, a disease involving too much sugar (glucose) in the bloodstream.
Blood sugar is the body’s fuel, and we get it primarily from our food. Levels of blood sugar rise after we eat, but soon after eating the pancreas begins to pump out a hormone called insulin. And there are insulin injections, which are used for those with Type 1 diabetes and those with Type 2 who haven’t responded to other medications.
